Indian outfit Olive Telecommunications has launched what it calls “India’s first dual powered mobile phone compatible with any AAA battery”.

Not only does the device have a standard rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, it also has space for one AAA battery – which will give you one extra hour talk time when your standard battery runs out. Incidentally, it has more than 100 hours standby time, and three hours’ talk time.

The low-end phone, with a 1.5 inch colour display and FM radio, retails for $37 – which should make it a winner in rural markets.

Olive’s marketing manager Ravi Perti told the AFP that “We have electrification all across the country but the power supply is erratic.”

“With our phone, all one needs to do is pack a few extra cells (batteries) if one is travelling in areas where one expects power supply disruptions.”
